Imām Aḥmad relates: “Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us; Ḥajjāj narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Abū al-Qāsim—meaning Miqsam—from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Prophet ﷺ pelted the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah on the Day of Sacrifice while mounted.”
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded it from Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ, through Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah, and declared it ḥasan. Ibn Mājah transmitted it as well, through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, from Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, from al-Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāʾ with this same chain.
Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Bayhaqī likewise report—on the authority of Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from Sulaymān ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Aḥwaṣ, from his mother, Umm Jundub al-Azdiyyah—that she said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stone the Jamrāt from the bottom of the valley while riding, pronouncing takbīr over every pebble. A man was behind him shielding him. I asked about him, and they said: ‘It is al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās.’ The people then crowded upon one another, so the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O people, let not some of you kill others. When you cast at the Jamrah, cast with pebbles the size used for khadhf.’ ” This is Abū Dāwūd’s wording. In another of his versions she says: “I saw him at the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah while mounted; I noticed a stone between his fingers. He threw it, the people threw, and he did not linger there.”
Ibn Mājah also records her saying: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Sacrifice at the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah, mounted upon a mule …” and he mentions the rest of the report. The reference to a mule here is exceedingly unusual.
Muslim, in his Ṣaḥīḥ, likewise transmits—through Ibn Jurayj—that Abū al-Zubayr informed him, having heard it from Jābir ibn
