Al-Bukhārī reports that Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet ﷺ cast the stones on the Day of Sacrifice in the forenoon, and on the ensuing days he would not cast them until the sun had passed its zenith.”
The ḥadīth that al-Bukhārī cites in suspended form is recorded with a continuous chain by Muslim. Ibn Jurayj related: “Abū al-Zubayr told me—having heard it from Jābir—who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast the Jamrah on the Day of Sacrifice in the forenoon; thereafter, he waited until the sun had declined.’ ”
Both Ṣaḥīḥs include the report of al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, who said: “ʿAbd Allāh (Ibn Masʿūd) pelted the Jamrah from the bottom of the valley. I said, ‘Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, some people cast from above it.’ He replied, ‘By Him besides Whom there is no god, this is the very spot where the one upon whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed stood.’ ” This is al-Bukhārī’s wording.
In another version of his, transmitted through Shuʿbah, from al-Ḥakam, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, it reads: “He came to the largest Jamrah, put the House to his left and Minā to his right, cast seven pebbles, and said, ‘In this manner did the one upon whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed cast them.’ ”
Al-Bukhārī then entitles a chapter: “Whoever stones the Jamrāt with seven pebbles, pronouncing takbīr with each pebble.” Ibn ʿUmar related this from the Prophet ﷺ. It is fully documented only in the report of Jābir, transmitted through Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir—as noted earlier—that he came to the Jamrah and threw seven pebbles at it, uttering takbīr with every pebble, pebbles the size used for khadhf.
Al-Bukhārī likewise records under this chapter, through al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, that he stoned the Jamrah from the bottom of the valley with seven pebbles, pronouncing takbīr with each one, then said, “From right here—by Him besides Whom there is no god—the one upon whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed stood.”
Muslim also transmits, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: Abū al-Zubayr informed me, having heard it from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast the Jamrah with seven pebbles the size used for khadhf.”
