Al-Bayhaqī relates: Imām Abū ʿUthmān informed us; Abū Ṭāhir ibn Khuzaymah informed us; my grandfather—the Imām of the Imāms, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Khuzaymah—narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from ʿĀmir ibn Shaqīq, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“I kept my eye on the Prophet ﷺ, and he did not cease reciting the talbiyah until he threw the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah with the very first pebble.”
By this same chain al-Bayhaqī also transmits from Ibn Khuzaymah: ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ al-Shaybānī narrated to us; Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from al-Faḍl, who said:
“I came down with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from ʿArafāt, and he went on proclaiming the talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah, pronouncing takbīr with every pebble; when the last pebble was cast, he ended the talbiyah.”
Al-Bayhaqī comments: “This additional detail is rare; it does not appear in the well-known narrations of Ibn ʿAbbās through al-Faḍl, though Ibn Khuzaymah favored it.”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq further said: “ʿAbbān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me, from ʿIkrimah, who said: ‘I descended with al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, and I continued to hear him recite the talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah. When he had hurled it, he stopped. I asked, “What is this?” He replied, “I saw my father, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, reciting the talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah of al-ʿAqabah, and he told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do the same.”’ ”
It was noted earlier in the report of al-Layth, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū Maʿbad, from Ibn ʿAbbās, through his brother al-Faḍl, that the Prophet ﷺ instructed the people in the Valley of Muḥassir to pick up the small pebbles used for casting at the Jamrah. Muslim recorded this.
Abū ʿĀliyah also relates, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said that al-Faḍl told him: “On the morning of the Day of Sacrifice the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, ‘Come, pick up some stones for me.’ I gathered for him pebbles the size of chick-peas, placed them in his hand, and he said, ‘Pebbles like these—pebbles like these. Beware of excess, for it was excess in religion that destroyed those before you.’ ” Al-Bayhaqī narrated this.
Jābir, in his own report, says: “When the Prophet ﷺ reached the hollow of Muḥassir he quickened his mount a little; then he took the middle road that emerges at the larger Jamrah. When he came to it he threw seven pebbles, pronouncing takbīr with each pebble—pebbles the size used for khadhf—and he cast them from the bottom of the valley.” Muslim recorded this account.
