ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ reports—on the authority of ʿAlī—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed from Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) until he reached Muhassir. There he urged his she-camel into a brisk pace until he had crossed the valley, then halted, seated al-Faḍl behind him, and went on to the jamrah, which he stoned. This is the concise wording of the tradition.
Imām Aḥmad related: Abū Aḥmad Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zubayrī narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAyyāsh ibn Abī Rabīʿah, from Zayd ibn ʿAlī, from his father, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood at ʿArafah and declared, “This is the standing-place; all of ʿArafah is a place of standing.” When the sun had set, he set off, seating Usāmah behind him, and set his camel into a fast trot while the people veered right and left and he did not heed them, continually saying, “Composure, O people.”
He then came to Jamʿ and led them in the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ prayers. He spent the night there until dawn, proceeded to Quzah, stood upon it and said, “This is the standing-place; all of Jamʿ is a standing-place.” He continued until he reached Muhassir, where he halted, tapped his mount so that it quickened its pace until the valley was behind them, then reined it in. He next seated al-Faḍl behind him, travelled on to the jamrah and pelted it, and then went to the place of sacrifice, saying, “This is the place of sacrifice; the whole of Minā is a place of sacrifice.”
A young woman of Khathʿam sought a ruling from him, saying, “My father is an elderly man who has become feeble; the obligation of Hajj has reached him. May I perform it on his behalf?” He replied, “Yes—perform it for your father.” While giving the answer he turned al-Faḍl’s face away. Al-ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, why did you turn your cousin’s face away?” He said, “I saw a young man and a young woman; I was not sure Satan would leave them in peace.”
Then a man came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I shaved before offering the sacrifice.” He answered, “Offer the sacrifice; there is no sin.” Another said, “O Messenger of Allah, I performed the ifādah before shaving.” He said, “Shave, or cut your hair; there is no sin.”
Thereafter he went to the House and circumambulated it, then came to Zamzam and said, “O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the watering service is yours. Were it not that the people would overrun you, I would have drawn water with it myself.”
Abū Dāwūd has also narrated this ḥadīth through Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal—from Yaḥyā ibn Ādam—from Sufyān al-Thawrī; al-Tirmidhī likewise transmits it through
