Maymūn said, “I witnessed ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—pray the dawn prayer at Jamʿ. He then stood and declared: ‘The idolaters would not depart until the sun had risen, saying, “Ashriq, Thabīr!” whereas the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out before the sun had risen.’
Al-Bukhārī reports: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ narrated to us; Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, who said:
‘I traveled with ʿAbd Allāh to Mecca, and when we arrived at Jamʿ he performed the two prayers, each separately, with an adhān and an iqāmah, taking his supper in between them; then he prayed Fajr as soon as dawn appeared. Some people were saying, “Dawn has broken,” while others said, “It has not yet broken.” He then said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: These two prayers have been shifted from their usual times in this place—the Maghrib (and ʿIshāʾ); therefore people must not reach Jamʿ until the night grows dark, and the dawn prayer is at this hour.” He remained standing until the daylight was bright, then said, “If the Commander of the Believers were to move on now he would be following the Sunnah.” I do not know,’ the narrator continues, ‘whether he said this because someone was rushing or because ʿUthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—had already set out. He continued proclaiming the talbiyah until he cast the pebbles at Jamrat al-ʿAqabah on the Day of Sacrifice.’
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī states: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Shaybānī informed us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Mubārak al-ʿĪshī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Muḥammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us at ʿArafah. After praising and extolling Allah, he said: “To proceed: The people of shirk and idols used to leave this place at sunset, when the sun rested on the mountain-tops like the turbans of men upon their heads; our practice opposes theirs. (They would likewise leave al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām at sunrise, when the sun was on the mountain-tops like the turbans of men upon their heads.) Our practice is contrary to theirs.”’
He added: This was also related by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, from Ibn Jurayj, from Muḥammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah, in mursal form.
Imām Aḥmad said: Abū Khālid Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān narrated to us and said, ‘I heard al-Aʿmash report from al-Ḥakam, from…’
