Muslim likewise transmitted the report—through Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah and Muḥammad ibn ʿUqbah, from Kurayb—in wording similar to that of their brother Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah.
Al-Bukhārī also said: Qutaybah related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; from Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmalah; from Kurayb; from Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said:
“I was riding pillion behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached the left-hand mountain pass just short of Muzdalifah, he dismounted and urinated. He then returned and I poured water over his hands, whereupon he performed a light ablution. I asked, ‘Prayer, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘The prayer lies ahead of you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted again and continued until he came to Muzdalifah, where he prayed. On the morning at Jamʿ, al-Faḍl rode behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Kurayb added: “ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās told me—on the authority of al-Faḍl—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued pronouncing the talbiyah until he reached the Jamrah.” Muslim also recorded the narration through Qutaybah, Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, and ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr, all of them from Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar.
Imām Aḥmad said: Wakiʿ narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Dharr narrated to us; from Mujāhid; from Usāmah ibn Zayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took him up behind him at ʿArafah. Usāmah related:
“The people said, ‘Our companion will inform us of what he did.’ When the Prophet moved off from ʿArafah he halted, holding back the head of his mount until its forehead touched, or almost touched, the front of the saddle. He was signaling to the people with his hand: ‘Calmness, calmness—calmness!’ until he reached Jamʿ. Then he seated al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās behind him. The people said, ‘Our companion will inform us of what the Messenger of Allah did.’ Al-Faḍl said: ‘He kept his pace gentle, just as it had been the previous day, until he came to the valley of Muḥassir, where he pressed forward through it until the ground leveled out beneath him.’ ”
Al-Bukhārī also said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Suwayd narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr, the freedman of the Muṭṭalib clan, narrated to me; Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, the freedman of Wālībah al-Kūfī, informed me; Ibn ʿAbbās related that he set out with the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of ʿArafah. The Prophet ﷺ heard behind him harsh shouting and the striking of camels, so he gestured toward them with his whip and said, “O people, calmness! True righteousness is not attained by driving hard.” Al-Bukhārī alone reported this version through this chain.
The narration of Imām Aḥmad, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī mentioned earlier likewise comes by way of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah ibn Zayd. Allah knows best.
