Usāmah ibn Zayd further related: “I was riding pillion behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he departed from ʿArafah, and his mount did not lift a single leg into a trot until we reached Jamʿ (Muzdalifah).”
Imām Aḥmad also said: Sufyān narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah, from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who told me that Usāmah ibn Zayd said: “The Prophet ﷺ took me up behind him at ʿArafah. When he came to the mountain pass he dismounted and relieved himself—he did not use the wording ‘he poured out water and I poured it for him’—then performed a light ablution. I asked, ‘Prayer?’ He replied, ‘The prayer is ahead of you.’ He then reached Muzdalifah, prayed Maghrib, loosened their packs, and afterwards prayed ʿIshāʾ.”
Imām Aḥmad transmitted it in this form from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah ibn Zayd and mentioned it in full. Al-Nasāʾī likewise reported it through al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥurayth, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah and Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmalah—both from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah. Our teacher Abū al-Ḥajjāj al-Mizzī remarked in his book Al-Aṭrāf: “The sound chain is Kurayb from Usāmah.”
Al-Bukhārī also said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Mālik informed us; from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Kurayb, from Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left ʿArafah, stopped in a ravine and relieved himself, then performed ablution but did not complete it thoroughly. I said, ‘Prayer?’ He replied, ‘The prayer is ahead of you.’ When he reached Muzdalifah he performed ablution again and perfected it. The call to prayer was given and he prayed Maghrib; then everyone made his camel kneel at his campsite. The iqāmah was then pronounced and he prayed ʿIshāʾ, offering nothing in between the two.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded the same narration through al-Qaʿnabī as well; Muslim through Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā; and al-Nasāʾī through Qutaybah, from Mālik, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah. Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim also transmitted it through Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah.
