When he heard the clamor of the people behind him, he called out, “Easy, people, easy! Keep your composure; righteousness is not attained by driving the animals hard.”
Whenever the crowd pressed in on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he would proceed at a gentle pace, and when he found an opening he would quicken the camel’s gait, continuing in that manner until he reached Muzdalifah, where he combined the Maghrib and the late evening prayer (ʿIshāʾ).
Imām Aḥmad likewise narrated the report through the chain of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said, “Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah related to me from Kurayb, from Usāmah ibn Zayd,” with similar wording.
He also said: Abū Kāmil narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us, from Qays ibn Saʿd, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left ʿArafah while I was riding behind him. He kept restraining his mount so tightly that her hoofs nearly struck the front of the saddle, saying, ‘People, maintain calm and dignity, for righteousness is not in forcing your camels to run.’”
The same narration is reported from ʿAffān through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, and al-Nasāʾī records it via Ḥammād ibn Salamah as well. Muslim transmits it through Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb, from Yazīd ibn Hārūn, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah in similar terms.
Usāmah added, “He continued to travel at this unhurried pace until he reached Jamʿ (Muzdalifah).”
Imām Aḥmad further said: Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥajjāj narrated to us; Ibn Abī Fudayk narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Dhʾīb, from Shuʿbah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Usāmah ibn Zayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took him up behind him on the Day of ʿArafah until they entered a mountain pass. There he relieved himself and performed wuduʾ, then remounted without praying.
He also said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us, from Qatādah, from ʿAzrah, from al-Shaʿbī, from
