Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī likewise related it, saying: Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Muʿammar informed us, from one who heard Qatādah say: Khilās ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:
On the Day of ʿArafah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “People, today Allah has shown you special favor: He has forgiven you—save for the wrongs you owe one another. He has accepted your wrongdoers on account of your righteous, and He has granted every doer of good what he asked. Now depart in the name of Allah.”
When they reached Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) he said: “Allah has forgiven your righteous, and He has allowed the righteous among you to intercede for the unrighteous. Mercy descends and envelopes them all; then it spreads across the earth and alights upon every penitent who has guarded his tongue and his hand. Iblīs and his troops station themselves on the hills of ʿArafāt watching what Allah does with the pilgrims. When mercy descends they and their army cry out in grief and ruin, saying, ‘I led them astray for ages, yet forgiveness has now overtaken them!’ They scatter, wailing in despair.”
What was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at this noble station of exalted revelation:
Imām Aḥmad said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; Abū al-ʿUmays narrated to us, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb, who reported:
A man from the Jews came to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and said, “Commander of the Believers, you recite a verse in your Scripture. Had it been revealed to us Jews, we would have made the day of its revelation a festival.”
He asked, “Which verse is that?”
The man replied, “Allah says: ‘This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and approved for you Islam as religion’ (Qur’an 5:3).”
ʿUmar said, “By Allah, I know the day on which it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the very hour it descended upon him: it came down on the afternoon of ʿArafah, on a Friday.”
Al-Bukhārī also transmitted it, through al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, from Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn.
