Ibn ʿAbbās said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ʿArafah, supplicating with his hands held to his chest the way a poor man begs for food.”
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī relates in his Musnad: ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī narrated to us; Ibn Liknānah ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed on the afternoon of ʿArafah for his community to receive forgiveness and mercy, and he prolonged his supplication. Allah revealed to him: “I have granted it, except for the wrongs they inflict upon one another; as for the sins that lie between Me and them, I have forgiven them.”
He said, “My Lord, You are able to reward the one who has been wronged with something better than his grievance and to pardon the wrongdoer.” Yet he received no answer that evening. When morning came at Muzdalifah he renewed the supplication, and Allah, exalted is He, answered: “I have forgiven them.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then smiled. One of his Companions remarked, “O Messenger of Allah, you have smiled at a moment when we had not seen you smile before.” He replied, “I smiled at the enemy of Allah, Iblīs. When he learned that Allah had answered my intercession on behalf of my community, he collapsed, crying out in despair and ruin and throwing dust upon his head.”
Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī transmitted the report in his Sunan through ʿĪsā ibn Ibrāhīm al-Barkī and Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, both from ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī, from Ibn Liknānah ibn ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās, from his father, from his grandfather, in abridged form.
Ibn Mājah narrated it through Ayyūb ibn Muḥammad al-Hāshimī, from ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kinānah ibn ʿAbbās, from his father, from his grandfather, in a longer version. Ibn Jarīr included it in his Tafsīr through Ismāʿīl ibn Sayf al-ʿIjlī, from ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī, from Ibn Kinānah—also called Abū Kinānah—from his father, from his grandfather al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās, and he related it in full.
