Ibn ʿUmar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “My supplication and the supplication of the prophets before me on the afternoon of ʿArafah is: ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is powerful over all things.’”
Imām Aḥmad related: Yazīd—that is, Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih al-Jurjasī—narrated to us; Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; Jubayr ibn ʿAmr al-Qurashī told me, from Abū Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, from Abū Yaḥyā, the client of the household of al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, from al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām رضي الله عنه, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ʿArafah recite the verse, ‘Allah bears witness that there is no deity except Him, as do the angels and those endowed with knowledge, upholding justice. There is no deity except Him, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:18). I too, O Lord, am among those who bear witness to this.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī recorded in his book Manāsik: al-Ḥasan ibn Muthannā ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us; ʿAffān ibn Muslim narrated to us; Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to us, from al-Agharr ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, from Khalīfah, from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The finest words that I and the prophets before me have spoken on the afternoon of ʿArafah are: ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is powerful over all things.’”
Al-Tirmidhī cited in the chapter on supplications: Muḥammad ibn Ḥātim al-Muʾaddib narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Thābit narrated to us; Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ—who was from Banū Asad—narrated to us, from al-Agharr ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, from Khalīfah ibn Ḥuṣayn, from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, who said: “The supplication the Messenger of Allah ﷺ most frequently offered while standing at ʿArafah was: ‘O Allah, to You belongs all praise such as we utter—and even better than what we utter. O Allah, to You belong my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying, and to You, my Lord, belongs my inheritance. I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the whisperings of the breast, and from the confusion of affairs. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil that the wind brings.’”
Al-Tirmidhī then commented, “This ḥadīth is gharib through this chain, and its isnād is not strong.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī also transmitted it through the route of Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah, from his brother ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbaydah, from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The supplication most frequently uttered by those before me, and my own supplication on the Day of ʿArafah, is to say: ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is powerful over all things. O Allah, place light in my sight, and in …’”
