Muḥammad—both of them reporting from Wakīʿ, from Hushab.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ and Abū Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿAmr have related to us, saying, ‘Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Abū Usāmah al-Kalbī narrated to us; Ḥasan ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us, from Hushab ibn ʿAqīl, from Mahdī al-Hajarī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on the Day of ʿArafah for those who are at ʿArafah.”’
Al-Bayhaqī commented: ‘This is how al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd reported it, whereas the version that has been preserved is on the authority of ʿIkrimah from Abū Hurayrah.’
Abū Ḥātim Muḥammad ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī recorded in his Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that when he was asked about fasting on the Day of ʿArafah he said: ‘I performed ḥajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he did not fast it; with Abū Bakr and he did not fast it; with ʿUmar and he did not fast it. I myself do not fast it, nor do I command it, nor do I forbid it.’
Imām Mālik transmitted—from Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād, the client of Ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The finest supplication is the supplication on the Day of ʿArafah, and the best words that I and the prophets before me have ever said are: “There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner.”’
Al-Bayhaqī remarked: ‘This report is mursal. It has also been narrated from Mālik with another connected chain, but that isnād is weak.’
Imām Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī likewise reported—through ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of ʿArafah, and the most excellent words that I and the prophets before me have uttered are: “There is no deity but Allah, alone without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things powerful.”’
Imām Aḥmad also transmitted—from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather—who said: ‘The supplication the Prophet ﷺ most frequently recited on the Day of ʿArafah was: “There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things powerful.”’
Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Mundah said: ‘Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Ayyūb al-Naysābūrī informed us; Aḥmad ibn Dāwūd ibn Jābir al-Aḥmasī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī narrated to us; Faraj ibn Faḍālah narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Nāfiʿ, from…’
