Muslim (1) likewise transmitted it through the narration of Mālik, and both of them—al-Bukhārī and Muslim—also related it by other chains from Abū al-Naḍr with the same wording (2).
I say: Umm al-Faḍl is the sister of Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith, the Mother of the Believers; their story is one and the same, and Allah knows best. The attribution of the mursal report to both women is sound, for it originates with them (3), unless the sending of the milk occurred later or the deed was performed twice, once by each of them. Allah knows best.
Imām Aḥmad (4) reported: Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Ayyūb narrated to us, who said, “I do not know whether I heard it directly from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr or was informed (5) from him.” He said, “I passed by Ibn ʿAbbās at ʿArafah (6) while he was eating pomegranates. He said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast at ʿArafah; Umm al-Faḍl sent him some milk and he drank it.’”
Aḥmad (7) also said: Wakiʿ narrated to us, Ibn Abī Dhʿib narrated to us, from Ṣāliḥ the client of al-Tawʾamah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that people disputed over the Prophet’s ﷺ fasting on the Day of ʿArafah. Umm al-Faḍl therefore sent milk to the Messenger of Allah, and he drank it.
Imām Aḥmad (8) further said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq and Ibn Bakr (9) both narrated to us, saying: Ibn Jurayj informed us. He said: ʿAṭāʾ reported that ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās invited al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās to eat on the Day of ʿArafah. He replied, “I am fasting.” ʿAbd Allah said, “Do not fast, for the Messenger of Allah was offered a hilāb (10) containing milk on the Day of ʿArafah and he drank from it. So do not fast, for the people take you as an example.”
Ibn Bakr and Rūḥ (11) added: “Indeed, the people follow your lead (12).”
Al-Bukhārī (13) said: Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “While a man was standing with the Prophet ﷺ at ʿArafah, he fell from his mount and it broke his neck—or he said….”
