Al-Bukhārī said (1): “Chapter: Uttering the talbiyah and the takbīr when setting out from Minā to ʿArafāt.” ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us—Mālik related to us—from Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Thaqafī, who asked Anas ibn Mālik, while the two of them were travelling from Minā to ʿArafāt: “What did you used to do on this day when you were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He replied, “Among us were those who recited the talbiyah, and no objection was raised against them; and among us were those who proclaimed the takbīr, and no objection was raised against them.” Muslim also recorded it (2) through the transmissions of Mālik and Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, both from Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿAwf ibn Riyāḥ al-Thaqafī al-Ḥijāzī, from Anas with this wording.
Al-Bukhārī further said (3): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maslama (4) related to us—Mālik—from Ibn Shihāb—from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh that ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān wrote to al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf, instructing him to follow ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar in the ḥajj. When the Day of ʿArafah arrived, Ibn ʿUmar came—while I was with him—just after the sun had begun to decline (or had passed its zenith). He called out at al-Ḥajjāj’s pavilion, “Where is he?” and al-Ḥajjāj came out to him. Ibn ʿUmar said, “Let us depart.” Al-Ḥajjāj asked, “Now?” He answered, “Yes.” Al-Ḥajjāj said, “Give me a moment to pour water over myself.” So Ibn ʿUmar dismounted and waited until he emerged. Then al-Ḥajjāj walked between me and my father. I said, “If you want to observe the Sunnah today, keep the sermon brief and hasten to the standing.” Ibn ʿUmar replied, “He has spoken the truth.” Al-Bukhārī also narrated it through al-Qaʿnabī (7) from Mālik, and al-Nasāʾī (8) recorded it from Ashhab and Ibn Wahb—both from Mālik.
Al-Bukhārī then added (9): Al-Layth told me—ʿAqīl, from Ibn Shihāb, from Sālim—that in the year al-Ḥajjāj marched against Ibn al-Zubayr he asked ʿAbd Allāh, “How should one act at this standing?” He replied (10), “If you wish to follow the Sunnah, perform the prayer early on the Day of ʿArafah.” Ibn ʿUmar said, “He has spoken the truth; they used to combine the Zuhr and ʿAṣr prayers as part of the Sunnah.” I asked Sālim, “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do that?” He said, “Whose Sunnah do you seek if not his?”
Abū Dāwūd said (11): Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal related to us—Yaʿqūb—my father (12)—from Ibn Isḥāq—from Nāfiʿ—from
