Abū Dāwūd said:
Ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated it from Wakīʿ exactly as Hannād reported; and ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm narrated to us—ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar narrated to us—ʿAbd al-Majīd Abū ʿAmr narrated to us, from al-ʿAddāʾ ibn Khālid, conveying the same meaning.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (1), on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivering a sermon at ʿArafāt: ‘Whoever cannot find two sandals, let him wear leather socks; and whoever cannot find an izār, let the pilgrim in consecration wear trousers.’ ”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (2) said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr related to me, from his father ʿAbbād, who said:
“The man who cried out to the people with the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ʿArafah was Rabīʿah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say to him (3): ‘Say: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: Do you know what month this is?’ They would reply, ‘The sacred month.’ He would then say, ‘Tell them: Indeed, Allah has made your blood and your wealth inviolable, just as sacred as this month of yours.’
“He would then say: ‘Say: O people, the Messenger of Allah says: Do you know what land this is?’—and he mentioned the remainder of the ḥadīth.”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq also said: Layth ibn Abī Sulaym related to me, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from ʿAmr (4) ibn Khārijah, who said:
“ʿAtāb ibn Asīd dispatched me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was standing at ʿArafah on some matter. When I reached him I stood beneath his she-camel, and its saliva was dripping onto my head. I heard him say:
‘O people, Allah [indeed] has delivered to every rightful claimant his due. No bequest is permitted for an heir. The child belongs to the bed, and for the fornicator there is only the stone. Whoever claims descent from one other than his father, or allies himself with a people other than his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all mankind; Allah will not accept from him any obligatory act or voluntary offering.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī (8), al-Nasāʾī (9), and Ibn Mājah (10) also recorded it—from the narration of Qatādah, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm, from ʿAmr ibn Khārijah— with similar wording.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “Ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
I say: There is a discrepancy in the chains through Qatādah, and Allah knows best. We shall, if Allah wills, mention the sermon he ﷺ delivered after this one on the Day of Sacrifice, together with the rulings, admonitions, details, and Prophetic etiquettes it contains.
