then strike them, but not harshly. Their right upon you is that you provide for them and clothe them honorably.(1)
I have left among you that by which you will never go astray after me, so long as you hold fast to it—the Book of Allah.(2) You will be asked about me; what will you say?
They replied, “We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, and given sincere counsel.” He then raised his index finger toward the sky and pointed it toward the people, saying three times, “O Allah, bear witness; O Allah, bear witness; O Allah, bear witness.”(3)
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī(4) said: “ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr narrated to us [and Jarīr narrated] from Mughīrah, from Mūsā ibn Ziyād ibn Ḥidhyām ibn ʿAmr al-Saʿdī, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in his sermon on the Day of ʿArafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage: ‘Know that your blood, your property, and your honor are inviolable among you, as sacred as this day of yours, this month of yours, and this land of yours.’ ”
Abū Dāwūd(5) said, in the chapter “Delivering the Sermon from a Pulpit at ʿArafah”: “Hannād narrated to us from Ibn Abī Zāʾidah; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from a man of Banū Ḍamrah, from his father or his uncle, who said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit at ʿArafah.’ ” This isnād is weak because it contains an unidentified narrator, and it has already been mentioned in the long ḥadīth of Jābir that he ﷺ delivered the sermon on his she-camel al-Qaṣwāʾ.
Abū Dāwūd(6) also said: “Musaddad narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Nubayṭ, from a man of the clan, from his father Nubayṭ, who said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at ʿArafah on a red mule, delivering a sermon.’ This too contains an unidentified narrator, but the ḥadīth of Jābir supports it.
Abū Dāwūd(8) further said: “Hannād ibn al-Sarrī and ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; they said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Majīd Abū ʿAmr,(9) who said: al-ʿAddāʾ ibn Khālid ibn Hawdhah told me—Hannād said: from ʿAbd al-Majīd, Khālid ibn al-ʿAddāʾ ibn Hawdhah told me—who said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people on the Day of ʿArafah while standing on a camel…’
