Ḥajjāj said in the ḥadīth: “Thereupon the people rose and began taking hold of his hand, wiping their faces with it. I too took his hand and placed it upon my face; it was cooler than ice and more fragrant than musk.” The two authors of the Ṣaḥīḥ (1)(2) have recorded this report in its entirety through the narration of Shuʿbah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained at al-Abṭaḥ—as we have already noted—on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. By that time all the people had released themselves from iḥrām except those who had brought their sacrificial animals with them.
During those days ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib arrived from Yemen with the Muslims who were with him and with the wealth he had collected. After performing ṭawāf he did not return to the Kaʿbah. When Thursday dawned, the Prophet ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer at al-Abṭaḥ on that very day, the Day of Tarwiyah. It is also called the Day of Minā because on it the pilgrims set out for Minā.
It has been related that the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon before this day. As for the day preceding it, I have seen in some marginal notes that it is called the Day of Adornment, because on it the sacrificial camels are decked with cloth covers and the like (3)—Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (4) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Julūdī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Mihrān narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Abū Qurrah narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “Whenever the Prophet ﷺ was about to enter the Day of Tarwiyah (5) he would address the people and inform them of their rites.”
The Prophet ﷺ then mounted, making for Minā before the sun had passed its zenith—though some say it was afterward—and those who had come out of iḥrām at al-Abṭaḥ re-entered into iḥrām for the Ḥajj once their mounts headed toward Minā.
ʿAbd al-Malik narrated—from ʿAṭāʾ—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh: “We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and had dissolved our iḥrām until the Day of Tarwiyah. Leaving Makkah behind us, we then proclaimed the talbiyah for Ḥajj.” Al-Bukhārī (6) cites this as a definitive suspended report.
Muslim (7) said: Muḥammad ibn Ḥātim narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj informed me, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, who said:
