Abū Dāwūd said (1): “Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh and Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ related to us; both stated: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from Maʿrūf—meaning Ibn Kharrabūdh al-Makkī—who said: Abū al-Ṭufayl reported: ‘I saw the Prophet ﷺ circling the House on his mount, touching the Corner with his staff and then kissing it.’ Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ added: ‘He then went out to al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah and performed seven circuits on his mount.’
Muslim (2) recorded the same ḥadīth in his Ṣaḥīḥ through Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī from Maʿrūf ibn Kharrabūdh, but without the addition cited by Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ (3). ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā transmitted it from Maʿrūf likewise without that extra wording, and Ibn Mājah narrated it through Wakīʿ and al-Ṭufayl ibn Mūsā, from Masrūq, also without the addition (4).
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (5) likewise reported it through Abū Saʿīd ibn [Abī] ʿAmr, al-Aṣamm, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Ṭālib, Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥakīm, and Yazīd ibn Mulayk (7), from Abū al-Ṭufayl—again without the extra wording. Allah knows best.
Al-Bayhaqī further said (8): “Abū Bakr ibn al-Ḥasan and Abū Zakariyyā ibn Abī Isḥāq informed us, saying: Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Duḥaym narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥāzim related to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā and Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwf informed us; both said: Ayman ibn Nābil narrated to us, from Qudāmah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmmār, who said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ making saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah on a camel—neither striking nor driving it on, and without calling out, “Move aside, move aside.”’ (9)
Al-Bayhaqī added: “Such is how the two of them reported it. Yet several transmitters narrated it from (10) Ayman with the wording: ‘He was stoning the Jamrah on the Day of Sacrifice.’ Both versions, he said, can well be authentic.”
I say: Imām Aḥmad also recorded this report in his Musnad (11) through Wakīʿ, Qurrān (12) ibn Tammām, and Abū Qurrā Mūsā ibn Ṭāriq (13)
