Imām Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāfiʿī said (1): “Muslim—meaning Ibn Khālid al-Zanjī—narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, that the Messenger of Allah said to ʿĀʾishah:
‘Your circumambulation of the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah suffices for both your Hajj and your ʿUmrah.’
Although outwardly mursal, its purport is musnad, as is shown by another statement of al-Shāfiʿī (2): ‘Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ.’ Al-Shāfiʿī added, ‘At times he would say: Sufyān, from ʿAṭāʾ, from ʿĀʾishah; and at times: from ʿAṭāʾ that the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿĀʾishah …,’ and he mentioned the report.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: ‘Ibn Abī ʿUmar likewise transmitted it from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah with a continuous chain. Muslim (3) recorded the same wording through Wuhaib, from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father (4), from ʿĀʾishah.’
Muslim also related (5) through Ibn Jurayj: ‘Abū al-Zubayr told me that he heard Jābir say: The Messenger of Allah entered upon ʿĀʾishah while she was weeping and asked,
“What makes you weep?”
She replied, “I weep because the people have ended their state of consecration and I have not; they have circled the House and I have not, and the time for Hajj has arrived.”
He said, “This is something Allah has decreed upon the daughters of Adam. Bathe and enter into iḥrām for Hajj.”
She said, “So I did that. When I became pure he said,
‘Perform ṭawāf of the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah; you have thereby exited from both your Hajj and your ʿUmrah.’”
She said, “O Messenger of Allah, I still feel uneasy about my ʿUmrah because I did not perform ṭawāf before the Hajj.”
He said, “Take her, O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and let her perform ʿUmrah from al-Tanʿīm.”’
He likewise transmitted (6) from Ibn Jurayj: ‘Abū al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jābir say: The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions did not perform saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah except once.’
According to the scholars of Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله, the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions who were driving the sacrificial animals had combined Hajj and ʿUmrah, as the preceding ḥadīths indicate. Allah knows best.
Al-Shāfiʿī further said (7): ‘Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from ʿAlī, who said concerning the qārin (the pilgrim who combines the two rites): “He performs two circumambulations and two saʿys.”’
Al-Shāfiʿī continued: ‘Some people have said: two ṭawāfs and two saʿys, basing their view on a weak narration from ʿAlī.’ He added, ‘Jaʿfar relates from ʿAlī the view we hold, and we have also transmitted it from the Prophet ﷺ (9), but (10) …”
