As for the report transmitted by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ, it reads: “Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd, from Abū al-Tufayl, who said: ‘I said to Ibn ʿAbbās, “I think I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He replied, “Describe him to me.” I said, “I saw him at al-Marwah on a she-camel, and the people were crowding around him.” Ibn ʿAbbās said, “That is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; the people were never pushed away from him nor driven off.”’”
Muslim alone reports this ḥadīth, and it contains no indication that the Prophet ﷺ performed the saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah while mounted, for the account is not tied to the Farewell Pilgrimage or to any other specified occasion. Even if one were to assume that it occurred during the Farewell Pilgrimage, it remains possible that, after completing his saʿy, sitting upon al-Marwah, addressing the people, and instructing those who had not brought sacrificial animals to convert their pilgrimage into ʿumrah—whereupon everyone released themselves from iḥrām except those who had driven the sacrificial animals, as related in Jābir’s narration—he ﷺ was then brought his camel, mounted it, and made his way to his lodging at al-Abṭaḥ, as we shall soon describe. It was at that moment that Abū al-Tufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthila al-Bakrī saw him; he is counted among the younger Companions.
I say: A number of Iraqi jurists—such as Abū Ḥanīfah, his companions, and al-Thawrī—hold that the qārin (one combining ḥajj and ʿumrah) performs two circumambulations of the Kaʿbah and two saʿys. This view is also related from ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, Mujāhid, and al-Shaʿbī. They cite as evidence Jābir’s lengthy narration, which shows that the Prophet ﷺ traversed between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah on foot, together with this narration indicating that he traversed between them while mounted, thereby counting two separate performances—one walking and one riding.
Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr records in his Sunan that ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) entered iḥrām for both ḥajj and ʿumrah. When he reached Mecca, he circumambulated the House and went between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah for his ʿumrah; then he returned, circumambulated the House again, and went between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah for his ḥajj, remaining in consecration until the Day of Sacrifice. These are his exact words.
Abū Dharr al-Harawī likewise relates in his Manāsik that ʿAlī combined ḥajj and ʿumrah, performed two circumambulations and two saʿys for them, and said: “This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it.”
The same report is transmitted by al-Bayhaqī, al-Dāraqutnī, and al-Nasāʾī in al-Nasāʾī’s Khaṣāʾiṣ ʿAlī. Al-Bayhaqī says in his Sunan:
