Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān—on the authority of Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ—also narrated the above muʿallaq report, and its full chain (1) is supplied here in the Book of Ṭawāf through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad, from Abū ʿĀmir, from Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān himself.
Muslim (2) relates—through al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā, Shuʿayb ibn Isḥāq, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, circumambulated the Kaʿbah on a camel (3), touching the Corner so that the people would not crowd him. This proves that he (﵇) performed ṭawāf on a mount during the Farewell Pilgrimage. That pilgrimage, however, involved three separate circumambulations: the first, Ṭawāf al-Qudūm (4); the second, Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah—the obligatory ṭawāf—which took place (5) on the Day of Sacrifice; and the third, Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ. It is therefore likely that his riding (﵇) occurred in one or both of the latter two (6), whereas the first, Ṭawāf al-Qudūm, he performed on foot. Imām al-Shāfiʿī (7) stated this explicitly, and Allah knows best and is most wise.
The supporting evidence is what the ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī cited in his Sunan al-Kubrá (8): “Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾammal ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿĪsā informed me; al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Musayyib narrated to us; Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq—namely, Ibn Yassār (﵀)—from Abū Jaʿfar, that is, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: ‘We entered Mecca when the forenoon was well advanced. The Prophet ﷺ came to the gate of the Mosque, made his mount kneel, then entered. He began with the Black Stone, touched it, and his eyes overflowed with tears. He then jogged three circuits and walked four until he had completed them. When he finished, he kissed the Stone, placed both hands (9) upon it, and wiped his face with them.’ This chain is good.
As for the report transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (10)—‘Musaddad narrated to us; Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca while unwell, so he performed ṭawāf on his riding beast. When he reached the Corner he touched it with a hooked staff; when he completed his ṭawāf he made the animal kneel and prayed two rakʿahs’—this narration is uniquely transmitted (11) by Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, and he
