Jābir, in the previously cited ḥadīth, relates:
“When we reached the House with him, he touched the Black Stone, then jogged three circuits and walked four. He then proceeded (1) to the Station of Abraham and recited, ‘And take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer’ (al-Baqarah 2:125). He placed the Station between himself and the House and it is mentioned that he prayed two rakʿahs (2) in which he recited, ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’ and, ‘Say: O you who disbelieve.’
If it be asked, ‘During this ṭawāf was he (﵇) mounted or on foot?’ the answer is that two seemingly conflicting reports have come down. We shall cite them both, show how they may be reconciled, and remove any confusion for those who imagine a contradiction. Allah is the One who grants success; upon Him we rely, and He is sufficient for us and the best Guardian.
Al-Bukhārī (﵀) (3) said: ‘Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ and Yaḥyā ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; they said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us; he informed us from Yūnus, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUbayd-Allāh ibn ʿAbd-Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Prophet ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, circumambulated on his camel, touching the Corner with a hooked staff (4).’
The rest of the compilers (5)—apart from al-Tirmidhī—also recorded it through various chains from Ibn Wahb.
Al-Bukhārī added: ‘Al-Darāwardī followed him up, reporting from the nephew of al-Zuhrī, from his uncle; this corroboration is exceedingly rare.’
Al-Bukhārī (6) further said: ‘Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us; Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Prophet ﷺ circumambulated the House on a camel, and whenever he reached the Corner he pointed to it.’
Al-Tirmidhī (7) transmitted the same report through ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-Majīd al-Thaqafī and ʿAbd al-Wārith (8), both from Khālid ibn Mihrān al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulated on his mount; when he came to the Corner he pointed to it.’ He graded it sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ).
Then (9) al-Bukhārī (10) said: ‘Musaddad narrated to us; Khālid ibn ʿAbd-Allāh narrated to us; Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Prophet ﷺ circumambulated the House on a camel. When he came to the Corner he pointed to it with something he had in his hand and proclaimed the takbīr.’ He was followed up by
