and they also bared their shoulders (1)—a further rebuttal of his view (2), for during the ʿUmrah of al-Jiʿrānah no fear remained, since it occurred after the Conquest, as stated earlier.
This was narrated by Ḥammād (3) ibn Salamah (4), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym (5), from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions performed ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah, whereupon they jogged around the House and bared their shoulders, placing their cloaks beneath their armpits and across their shoulders. Abū Dāwūd likewise transmitted it (6) through Ḥammād with a similar wording, and through (8) ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khuthaym, from (9) Abū al-Tufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās with the same content.
As for uncovering the shoulder during the Farewell Pilgrimage, Qubaysah and al-Firyābī related from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jubayr ibn Shaybah, from Ibn (10) Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah, from Umayyah (11), who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulating the House with his shoulder bared.” Al-Tirmidhī (12) recorded it through al-Thawrī’s chain and graded it “sound and good.”
Abū Dāwūd (13) likewise said: Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us, Sufyān narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn (14) Yaʿlā, from his father, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulated with his shoulder bared, wearing a green mantle” (15).
Imām Aḥmad (16) transmitted it in the same manner, from Wakīʿ, from al-Thawrī, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Yaʿlā (14), from his father: that when the Prophet ﷺ arrived he circumambulated the House with his shoulder bared, wearing a Hadramī cloak (17).
