Fāṭimah had come out of ihram; she put on brightly coloured garments and applied kohl, and some people objected. She said, “My father instructed me to do that.”
ʿAlī later related in Kūfah—Jaʿfar added, “My father noted that Jābir did not mention this word-for-word—that I went, slightly agitated, to seek a ruling from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what Fāṭimah had reported. I said, ‘Fāṭimah has put on brightly dyed clothes and applied kohl, claiming, “My father ordered me to do it.”’ He replied, ‘She is right, she is right; I am the one who told her to do so.’
Jābir went on: The Prophet ﷺ then asked ʿAlī, ‘With what intention did you enter ihram?’ He answered, ‘O Allah, I enter ihram with the same intention as Your Messenger.’ The Prophet added, ‘And you have the sacrificial animals with you?’ When ʿAlī confirmed this, he said, ‘Then do not come out of ihram.’
The total number of animals brought by ʿAlī from Yemen together with those the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had brought from Madinah was one hundred. The Prophet ﷺ slaughtered sixty-three of them with his own hand, then gave the rest to ʿAlī, who sacrificed what remained, and the Prophet made him a partner in his offering. He then ordered that a piece from every camel be placed in a pot, and the two of them ate some of the meat and drank from its broth.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘I have sacrificed here, and all of Minā is a place of sacrifice.’ He stood at ʿArafah and said, ‘I am standing here, and all of ʿArafah is a place of standing.’ He likewise halted at Muzdalifah and said, ‘I am standing here, and all of Muzdalifah is a place of standing.’
This is the wording recorded by Imām Aḥmad, though he abbreviated the ending considerably.
Imām Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj also narrated it in the Book of Pilgrimage Rites of his Ṣaḥīḥ, through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm, both from Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, from his father, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and he gave the full account.
We have already pointed out the additional phrases that differ between the versions of Aḥmad and Muslim up to the Prophet’s words to ʿAlī, ‘You have spoken truly, you have spoken truly. What did you say when you made the ḥajj obligatory?’ He replied, ‘I said: O Allah, I enter ihram with whatever intention Your Messenger ﷺ has entered.’
