with a cloth, then enter into the state of ihram.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set out, and when his camel had reached the level ground of al-Bayḍāʾ he raised his voice in pure monotheistic talbiyah:
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am; here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You; You have no partner.”
The people likewise proclaimed the talbiyah, adding such phrases as “Lord of the Ascending Ways” and the like. The Prophet ﷺ heard them and did not reproach them.
I looked as far as my eye could see in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw riders and walkers; the same sight lay behind him, to his right, and to his left.
Jābir said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in our midst while the Qur’an was still being revealed to him; he alone understood its interpretation, and whatever he did we followed. We departed intending nothing but ḥajj. When we reached the Kaʿbah, the Prophet ﷺ touched the Black Stone, then trotted quickly for three circuits and walked for four. Once he had finished, he went to the Station of Abraham and prayed two rakʿahs behind it, after which he recited:
“Take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer.” (2:125)
Imam Aḥmad related that Abū ʿAbd Allāh—meaning Jaʿfar—added: In those two rakʿahs he recited “Say: He is Allah, the One” (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ) and “Say: O disbelievers” (Sūrat al-Kāfirūn). He then touched the Stone again and proceeded to Ṣafā, where he recited:
“Indeed, Ṣafā and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” (2:158)
He then said, “We begin with what Allah began with,” ascended Ṣafā, and when the House came into view he pronounced the takbīr and declared:
“There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise; He is Powerful over all things. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and single-handedly defeated—or overcame—the confederates.”
He supplicated, then repeated those words, descended, and when his feet reached the bottom of the valley he jogged; upon ascending he walked. Reaching Marwah, he climbed it, and when the House came into view he repeated what he had said on Ṣafā. When he completed the seventh circuit at Marwah he announced:
“O people! Had I known beforehand what I now know, I would not have brought sacrificial animals; I would have made it an ʿumrah. So whoever among you has no sacrificial animal should leave the state of ihram and count this as an ʿumrah.”
All the people accordingly came out of ihram. Suraqah ibn Mālik ibn Juʿshum, who was down in the valley, called out, “Messenger of Allah, is this for this year only or for all time?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and replied, “For all time—forever,” saying it three times.
He then added, “ʿUmrah has been incorporated into ḥajj until the Day of Resurrection.”
Jābir continued: ʿAlī arrived from Yemen bringing sacrificial animals, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had likewise brought some from Madinah. Then Fāṭimah
