Imam Aḥmad also said in his Musnad:
“As-Sāʾib ibn Khallād ibn Suwayd Abū Sahlah al-Anṣārī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Bakr narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj informed us. Ruḥ likewise narrated to us and said, ‘Ibn Jurayj narrated to us.’ Ibn Jurayj said: ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm wrote to me, transmitting from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, from Khallād ibn al-Sāʾib al-Anṣārī, from his father al-Sāʾib ibn Khallād, who heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Gabriel came to me and said, ‘Allah commands you to instruct your Companions to raise their voices with the talbiyah and the proclamation of ihrām.’”’
Ruḥ’s wording is: “with the talbiyah or the proclamation of ihrām.” He added, “I do not know which of us—myself, ʿAbd Allāh, or Khallād—mentioned ‘the proclamation of ihrām’ and which of us said ‘the talbiyah.’” This is Aḥmad’s exact wording in the Musnad. Our teacher likewise cited it in his Aṭrāf from Ibn Jurayj, identical to the versions of Mālik and Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah—Allah knows best.

Citing the ḥadīth of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh concerning the Prophet’s pilgrimage ﷺ. This report, on its own, sets out the rites in full; we judged it best to place it here because it includes the talbiyah and its variants, linking what has preceded and what will follow. We shall therefore present its various chains and wordings, and then append supporting narrations with a similar purport. Allah is the One whose help is sought.
Imam Aḥmad said: Yḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; my father narrated to me. He said:
“We came to Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh while he was among the clan of Banū Salimah and asked him about the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in Madinah for nine years without performing ḥajj, then a public announcement was made that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform ḥajj that very year.
So large numbers of people came to Madinah, all of them eager to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out when ten days of Dhu’l-Qaʿdah remained, and we went out with him. When he reached Dhul-Ḥulayfah, Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays began post-partum bleeding after giving birth to Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, ‘What should I do?’ He replied, ‘Bathe, then bind yourself with a cloth (istathfirī)…’
