Imām Aḥmad (1) said: Rawḥ narrated to us, Usāmah ibn Zayd narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Labīd narrated to me, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Gabriel (2) commanded me to raise my voice when uttering the talbiyah, for it is one of the rites (3) of Ḥajj.” Aḥmad alone related this ḥadīth.
Al-Bayhaqī (4) also transmitted it, through al-Ḥākim → al-Aṣamm → Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam → Ibn Wahb → Usāmah ibn Zayd, together with Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Labīd, from al-Muṭṭalib, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he cited the same wording.
ʿAbd al-Razzāq (5) said: al-Thawrī informed us, from Ibn Abī Labīd, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn Ḥanṭab, from Khallād ibn al-Sāʾib, from Zayd ibn Khālid, who said: “Gabriel came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Order your Companions to raise their voices with the talbiyah, for it is the emblem of Ḥajj.’”
Ibn Mājah (7) reported it in the same form through ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad → Wakīʿ → al-Thawrī, and it was likewise narrated by Shuʿbah and Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Labīd.
Imām Aḥmad (8) also said: Wakīʿ narrated to us; Sufyān (9) narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Labīd, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab, from Khallād ibn al-Sāʾib, from Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Gabriel (10) came to me and said, ‘O Muḥammad, command your Companions to raise their voices with the talbiyah, for it is the emblem of Ḥajj.’”
Our shaykh Abū l-Ḥajjāj al-Mizzī (11) remarks in his work al-Aṭrāf (12): “It is also transmitted by Muʿāwiyah ibn (13) Hishām …”
