A Mention of the Talbiyah proclaimed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
Al-Shafiʿi (1) said: Mālik narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that the talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was:
“Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk; labbayk, You have no partner, labbayk; truly all praise and bounty are Yours, and sovereignty (2) — You have no partner.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar used to add: “Labbayka labbayk (3) wa saʿdayk; all goodness is in Your hands; labbayk; to You is aspiration and deed.”
Al-Bukhārī (4) transmitted it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf, and Muslim (5) through Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā—both of them from Mālik with the same chain.
Muslim (6) also said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād related to us; Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl related to us, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, and Nāfiʿ (7), the freedman of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, and Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar:
Whenever the riding beast of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood upright with him at the mosque of Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah, he would begin the talbiyah, saying:
“Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk; labbayk, You have no partner, labbayk; indeed, praise, favor, and dominion are Yours; You have no partner.”
They said: ʿAbd Allāh used to affirm, “This (8) is the talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah.”
Nāfiʿ added: ʿAbd Allāh would append to it: “Labbayka labbayk labbayk wa saʿdayk; all goodness is in Your hands; labbayk; toward You is earnest desire and action.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Mathnā related to us; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd related to us, from ʿUbayd Allāh (9); he informed me from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “I learnt the talbiyah directly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,” and he reported something similar to their narration.
Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā related to me; Ibn Wahb related to us; Yūnus informed me, from Ibn Shihāb—who said: Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar told me, from his father, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his hair bound with gum (10), proclaiming:
‘Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk; labbayk la sharīka laka labbayk; indeed, praise, grace, and dominion are Yours; You have no partner,’
and he added nothing beyond these words, whereas ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar used to say: …”
