Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In his Musnad (1) he relates:

Hishām narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Shaykh al-Hunāʾī—whose name was Ḥaywān ibn Khālid—that Muʿāwiyah said to a group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

“Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade leopard-skin coverings?” They replied, “Yes, indeed—by Allah!” He said, “And I testify to the same.”

He then asked, “Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade wearing gold except in small, isolated pieces?” They answered, “Yes, indeed—by Allah!”

He continued, “Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade combining the Hajj and the ʿumrah together?” They replied, “By Allah, we do not.” He said, “By Allah, it is certainly among those very prohibitions!”

Imām Aḥmad (5) likewise reported:

ʿAffān narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Shaykh al-Hunāʾī, who said: “I was in an assembly of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the presence of Muʿāwiyah. Muʿāwiyah said, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade using leopard hides as riding gear?’ They replied, ‘Yes, indeed—by Allah!’ He said, ‘And do you know that he forbade wearing gold except in small pieces?’ They replied, ‘Yes, indeed—by Allah!’ He said, ‘And do you know that he forbade drinking from vessels of gold and silver?’ They replied, ‘Yes, indeed—by Allah!’ He said, ‘And do you know that he forbade mutʿah—meaning the mutʿah of Hajj?’ They replied, ‘By Allah, we do not.’ [He said, ‘Yet it is right there among them!’]”

Aḥmad (7) also transmitted:

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū Shaykh al-Hunāʾī, who said that he was present with Muʿāwiyah while a gathering of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ was with him. Muʿāwiyah said to them:

“Do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade riding on leopard hides?” They said, “Yes!” He asked, “Do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade wearing silk?” They said, “Yes, indeed—by Allah!” He asked, “Do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade drinking from gold and silver vessels?” They said, “Yes, indeed—by Allah!” He asked, “Do you know that the Messenger of Allah forbade combining Hajj and ʿumrah in one journey?” They said, “By Allah, we do not.” He said, “By Allah, it is certainly among those prohibitions!”

A similar narration was reported by Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Qatādah, who added, “But you have forgotten it.”

(1) Al-Bayhaqi records it in Sunan al-Kubra (vol. 5, p. 19) via the transmission of al-Tayalsi. (2) Critical note: ‘Abi Sih al-Hannani, whose name was Safwan b. Khalid. Ibn Hajar adds that he is also called Haywan b. Khalid or Khaywan b. Khalid (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, vol. 12, pp. 129–130). (3) Ibn al-Athir explains in al-Nihaya fi Gharib al-Hadith that “saffaf al-numur” (layers of tiger skins) is the plural of siffa (saddle blanket), equivalent to the mithara (pack-saddle pad). He notes this matches his other remark forbidding riding on tiger skins. (4) He further comments: “The phrase ‘he forbade wearing gold except in trimmed pieces’—I understand this to permit small items like a ring or earring, while disliking the larger pieces customary among the extravagant, the showy, and the arrogant. ‘Trimmed’ refers to items not subject to zakat.” (5) It is also narrated by Ahmad (Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4, p. 92). (6) Variant reading: “qala” (he said). (7) It is also narrated by Ahmad (Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4, p. 99). (8) In both A and T manuscripts the verb appears as “ta’lamuna” without the interrogative hamza.
