She said:
“O Messenger of Allah, why have the people ended their ʿumrah while you have not ended yours?”
He replied,
“I have garlanded my sacrificial animal and matted my hair; I will not come out of iḥrām until I have slaughtered it.”
Imām Aḥmad (1) also reported: (Abū al-Yamān narrated to us) (2) Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah narrated to us. He said: Nāfiʿ related that ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar used to say: Ḥafṣah, the Prophet’s wife ﷺ, informed us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded his wives to come out of iḥrām during the Farewell Pilgrimage. One of them said to him, “What prevents you from coming out?” He answered,
“I have matted my hair and garlanded my sacrificial animal; I shall not exit iḥrām until I slaughter my offering.”
Aḥmad (3) likewise said: Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us—my father narrated to us—from Ibn Isḥāq; he told me, from Nāfiʿ (4), from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar, from Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar, that she said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed his wives to come out of iḥrām for ʿumrah, we said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is keeping you from coming out with us?” He replied,
“I have sent my sacrificial animal ahead and matted my hair; I will not come out of iḥrām until I slaughter my sacrifice.”
Aḥmad (6) further transmitted it through Kathīr ibn Hishām, from Jaʿfar ibn Burqān, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from Ḥafṣah—reporting the same wording. This ḥadīth thus shows that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wearing the iḥrām of ʿumrah and had not exited it, and from the earlier reports of ifrād we know that he had also entered iḥrām for ḥajj. Together, these reports prove that he was performing qirān, in agreement with the narrations that state this explicitly. Allah knows best.
The narration of ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers (7)
Al-Bukhārī (8) said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Maslamah narrated to us, from Mālik, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the Farewell Pilgrimage and entered iḥrām for ʿumrah. The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Whoever has a sacrificial animal with him should enter iḥrām for ḥajj along with the ʿumrah, and he must not come out of iḥrām until he completes them both together.” When we reached Mecca I was menstruating, so I neither circumambulated the House nor walked between Ṣafā and Marwah. I complained of this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “Undo your braids, comb your hair, enter iḥrām for ḥajj, and leave the ʿumrah aside.” I did so, and when I had completed the ḥajj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with
