And so did Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān; all four of them narrate from Sulaymān ibn Tarkhān al-Taymī. He said: “I heard Ghunaym ibn Qays say: I asked Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ about the mutʿah (tamattuʿ). He replied, ‘We practiced it, and at that time this man was a disbeliever with the ʿUrush.’” Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, in his version, added: “—meaning Muʿāwiyah.”
ʿAbd al-Razzaq (1) likewise reported it—through Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān—and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak; both transmit from Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Ghunaym ibn Qays: “I asked Saʿd about enjoying ʿUmrah up to Hajj (tamattuʿ). He said, ‘I performed it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while this man was then a disbeliever with the ʿUrush’ (2)—that is, he was still in Mecca, and the one meant is Muʿāwiyah.
“This second report has the sounder chain, and we have cited it only for corroboration, not as the main proof. The first report is also authentic, yet it is not as explicit regarding the intended ruling. Allah knows best.
The narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā
Al-Ṭabarānī (4) said: Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Mughīrah al-Miṣrī related to us; Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān related to us; Yazīd ibn ʿAtāʾ related to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Hajj and ʿUmrah only because he knew he would not perform Hajj after that year.”
The narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās on the matter
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: Abū al-Naḍr narrated to us; Dāwūd—meaning al-ʿAṭṭār (6)—narrated to us, from ʿAmr, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿUmrahs: the ʿUmrah of Ḥudaybiyah, the compensatory ʿUmrah, the third from al-Jiʿrānah, and the fourth together with his Hajj.”
This was likewise transmitted by Abū Dāʾūd (7), al-Tirmidhī (8), and Ibn Mājah (9) through various chains from Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAṭṭār al-Makkī, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan gharīb. He also narrated it—through Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿAmr, from ʿIkrimah—as a mursal report, and it was likewise transmitted by the ḥāfiẓ
