From Jābir: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Hajj and ʿUmrah and performed a single circumambulation for both.” He (al-Tirmidhī) then commented, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan,” while another manuscript reads, “ṣaḥīḥ.”
Ibn Ḥibbān also included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of Jābir, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ made only one ṭawāf for his Hajj and his ʿUmrah.”
I say: This Ḥajjāj is Ibn Arṭāʾah, and more than one of the leading scholars have criticized him. Yet the report is likewise transmitted through another route from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, as Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Barār relates in his Musnad: “Muqaddam ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; my uncle al-Qāsim ibn Yaḥyā ibn Muqaddam narrated to me; from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym; from Abū al-Zubayr; from Jābir: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, combined Hajj and ʿUmrah, and drove the sacrificial animals with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever has not garlanded the sacrificial animal should treat his rites as an ʿUmrah.’”
Al-Bazzār then remarked: “We do not know this wording to be reported from Jābir except through this pathway with this chain. Al-Bazzār alone transmits it in his Musnad, and its isnād is exceedingly unusual; it occurs in none of the six canonical books through this route. Allah knows best.”
[The narration of Abū Ṭalḥah Zayd ibn Sahl al-Anṣārī]
Imām Aḥmad said: “Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Ḥajjāj—meaning Ibn Arṭāʾah—narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Abū Ṭalḥah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Hajj and ʿUmrah.”
Ibn Mājah likewise recorded it, through ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, with the same chain and wording: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined Hajj and ʿUmrah.
