from Saʿd, the freedman of al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, who said: “We set out with ʿAlī and reached Dhū al-Ḥulayfah. ʿAlī announced, ‘I intend to combine Hajj and ʿUmrah. Whoever wishes to do the same should say what I say.’ He then raised his voice in talbiyah, declaring: ‘Here I am for a Hajj and an ʿUmrah together.’”
Sālim added: “Anas ibn Mālik also informed me, saying, ‘By Allah, my foot was touching the foot of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was proclaiming the talbiyah for both rites together.’” This chain, too, is sound from this route, yet the two Shaykhs did not include it. This wording likewise refutes al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bazzār’s interpretation of the ḥadīth of Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl from Anas, as mentioned earlier—and Allah knows best.

Sulaymān ibn Ṭarḫān al-Taymī on Anas’s authority. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “Yaḥyā ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿArabī narrated to us; al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; I heard my father relate from Anas ibn Mālik: ‘I heard the Prophet ﷺ proclaim the talbiyah for both of them together.’” Al-Bazzār then remarked: “No one transmitted it from al-Taymī except his son al-Muʿtamir, and he was heard only by Yaḥyā ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿArabī.” I say: the chain meets the criteria of authenticity, yet it was not recorded by the two Shaykhs.

Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr on Anas’s authority. Imām Aḥmad said: “Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Qazaʿah—Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr—from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: ‘I was riding pillion behind Abū Ṭalḥah; the knee of Abū Ṭalḥah was almost touching the knee of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pronouncing the talbiyah for both.’” This isnād is good; Aḥmad alone transmitted it, the two Shaykhs did not, and it clearly refutes al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bazzār.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd—Abū Qilābah al-Jarmī—on Anas’s authority. Imām Aḥmad said: “ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Anas, who said: ‘I was riding pillion behind Abū Ṭalḥah while he was travelling alongside the Prophet ﷺ. My foot was touching the stirrup of the Prophet ﷺ, and I heard him proclaim the talbiyah for both Hajj and ʿUmrah together.’” Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded it through several routes from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Anas, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ performed the noon prayer in Madinah as four rakʿahs and the afternoon prayer at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah as two; he spent the night there until dawn, then mounted his camel, and when it reached al-Bayḍāʾ he praised Allah, glorified Him, and magnified Him, then entered iḥrām for Hajj and ʿUmrah, and the people all did the same.” In another of his narrations he said: “I was …”
