From Abū Isḥāq, on the authority of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said:
“I was with ʿAlī when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed him in charge of Yemen (1),” and he related the story of ʿAlī’s return.
ʿAlī said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, ‘How did you pronounce the talbiyah?’ I replied, ‘I declared the very talbiyah of the Prophet ﷺ.’ He then said, ‘I myself have driven the sacrificial animals and have combined the rites.’”
Al-Nasāʾī (2) transmitted the report through Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn with his chain, and it meets the conditions set by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (3) critiqued it on the grounds that this wording does not appear in Jābir’s lengthy ḥadīth; yet this objection is open to question, for qirān is in fact reported in the narration of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, as will be shown shortly, God willing (4).
Ibn Ḥibbān (5) likewise records in his Ṣaḥīḥ, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, that he said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed from Madinah while I set out from Yemen, and I declared: ‘At Your service with a talbiyah identical to that of the Prophet.’ The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘I have entered consecration for both Hajj and ʿUmrah together.’”
The narration of Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him—has reached us through several Successors. We list them here in alphabetical order:
- Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī. Concerning him Imām Aḥmad said: “Hushaym related to us; Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl related to us; Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī informed us” (6). He said:
“I heard Anas ibn Mālik recount: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounce the talbiyah for both Hajj and ʿUmrah together.’ I conveyed this to Ibn ʿUmar, who responded, ‘He pronounced the talbiyah for Hajj alone.’ I then met Anas and told him what Ibn ʿUmar had said. He replied, ‘Do you think we were mere children? I myself heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Here I am for an ʿUmrah and a Hajj.”’”
Al-Bukhārī (8) related it from Musaddad, from Bishr ibn al-Muḍaffar (9), from Ḥumayd with this wording, and Muslim likewise recorded it through Suraij ibn Yūnus (10) from Hushaym.
