These chains of transmission are sound and meet the criteria of authenticity. Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī, and Ibn Mājah likewise narrated the report through several routes from Abū Wā’il Shaqīq ibn Salamah with the same content.
Al-Nasā’ī, in the Book of Ḥajj of his Sunan, records: “Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shaqīq related to us; my father related to us; from Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkari; from Muṭarrif; from Salamah ibn Kuhayl; from Ṭāwūs; from Ibn ʿAbbās; from ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them—who said: ‘By Allah, I do forbid you the mutʿah (i.e., performing ʿUmrah during the months of Ḥajj and then completing Ḥajj), even though it is in the Book of Allah and was practiced by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.’” Its chain is sound.
[The narration of the two Commanders of the Faithful, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with them]
Imām Aḥmad reports: “Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; from ʿAmr ibn Murrah; from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said: ʿAlī and ʿUthmān met at ʿUsfān, and ʿUthmān used to forbid the mutʿah—or the ʿUmrah. ʿAlī said, ‘Why do you prohibit something that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, himself practiced?’ ʿUthmān replied, ‘Spare us your objection.’” Imām Aḥmad records this version in abridged form.
Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim include it in their two Ṣaḥīḥ collections, through Shuʿbah, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said: “ʿAlī and ʿUthmān disagreed at ʿUsfān about the mutʿah. ʿAlī said, ‘Why would you forbid something the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed?’ When he saw this, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib entered iḥrām for both rites together.” This is Bukhārī’s wording.
Al-Bukhārī also relates: “Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Ghundar narrated to us; from Shuʿbah; from al-Ḥakam; from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn; from Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, who said: ‘I witnessed ʿUthmān and ʿAlī, while ʿUthmān was forbidding the mutʿah and forbidding that the two rites be combined …’” (the report continues).
