Salmān said: “It was read to ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad while I was present: Abū Zayd al-Harawī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to us; ʿIkrimah narrated to us; Ibn ʿAbbās told me, and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb told me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
‘Gabriel (upon him be peace) came to me while I was in al-ʿAqīq and said, “Pray two rakʿahs in this blessed valley and proclaim: ‘An ʿUmrah within a Hajj.’ Indeed, ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.”’
Al-Bayhaqī then remarked, ‘Al-Bukhārī also transmitted it through Abū Zayd al-Harawī.’
Imām Aḥmad reported: Hushaym narrated to us; Sayyār narrated from Abū Wāʾil that a man who had been a Christian—called al-Ṣubayyi ibn Maʿbad—embraced Islam and wished to go out for jihad. People told him, ‘Begin with Hajj.’ He therefore went to the Ashʿarī, who instructed him to enter iḥrām for both Hajj and ʿUmrah together, and he did so. While he was reciting the talbiyah, he passed by Zayd ibn Ṣūḥān and Salmān ibn Rabīʿah. One of them said to the other, ‘This man is more astray than the camel of his people.’ Al-Ṣubayyi heard the remark and it weighed heavily on him. When he arrived, he came to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and told him what had happened. ʿUmar said to him, ‘You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’ On another occasion I heard him say, ‘You have been granted success in following the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’
Imām Aḥmad also transmitted the report through Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, from al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq Abū Wāʾil, from al-Ṣubayyi ibn Maʿbad, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, with the same content, adding: ‘They had no basis for what they said; you have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’ He likewise related it from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil.
He further transmitted it from Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from al-Ḥakam, from Abū Wāʾil; and from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿAbdah ibn Abī Lubābah, from Abū Wāʾil, who said:
‘Al-Ṣubayyi ibn Maʿbad related: “I was a Christian man who embraced Islam and entered iḥrām for both Hajj and ʿUmrah. Zayd ibn Ṣūḥān and Salmān ibn Rabīʿah heard me proclaiming the talbiyah for both rites and said, ‘This man is more astray than the camel of his people.’ Their words felt to me as though a mountain had been placed upon me. I came to ʿUmar and informed him; he turned to them and reproached them, then turned to me and said, ‘You have been guided to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’”’
ʿAbdah added: Abū Wāʾil said, ‘Masrūq and I would often go to al-Ṣubayyi ibn Maʿbad and question him about this matter.’
