ʿAbd al-Razzāq reports—through Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, both of whom transmit from Sulaymān al-Taymī—that Ghunaym ibn Qays said: “I asked Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ about performing tamattuʿ, the combination of ʿUmrah with Hajj. He answered, ‘I did it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and on that day a certain man was still a disbeliever in al-ʿUrush’—meaning Mecca—and by that he intended Muʿāwiyah.”
Muslim likewise relates the ḥadīth, through Shuʿbah, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, and Marwān al-Fazārī, all from Sulaymān al-Taymī, who said: “I heard Ghunaym ibn Qays say, ‘I asked Saʿd about al-mutʿah (tamattuʿ), and he replied, “We practiced it, and that day a man was still an unbeliever in al-ʿUrush.”’ In Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd’s version it is clarified that the person meant was Muʿāwiyah.
All of this reflects the broader use of the term tamattuʿ, which is wider than its technical sense of entering iḥrām for ʿUmrah, completing it, and then entering iḥrām for Hajj. It even embraces qirān. Saʿd’s wording in fact indicates that tamattuʿ can refer to performing an ʿUmrah during the months of Hajj, for they performed such an ʿUmrah while Muʿāwiyah was still a polytheist in Mecca, before the Hajj—either the ʿUmrah of al-Ḥudaybiyah or, more probably, the ʿUmrah of al-Qaḍāʾ. As for the ʿUmrah of al-Jiʿirānah, Muʿāwiyah had already embraced Islam with his father on the night Mecca was conquered. We also narrate that he trimmed some of the Prophet’s ﷺ hair with a razor during one of the Prophet’s ʿUmrahs—and that was undoubtedly the ʿUmrah of al-Jiʿirānah. Allah knows best.

The narration of the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him):
We have already mentioned al-Bukhārī’s report—on the authority of Abū ʿAmr al-Awzāʿī, who heard it from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—stating that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the valley of al-ʿAqīq say, ‘A messenger from my Lord came to me and said: Perform prayer in this blessed valley and declare: “An ʿUmrah within a Hajj.”’”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ al-Muqriʾ informed us in Baghdad, saying, ‘Aḥmad ibn…’
