Al-Ṭiyālisī (1) records in his Musnad—and so does Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah, from Shuʿbah, from Muslim al-Qurrī (2)—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began his iḥrām for Hajj.” In the wording preserved by Abū Dāwūd it reads: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions entered iḥrām for Hajj; those among them who had no sacrificial animal came out of iḥrām, whereas whoever had brought a sacrificial animal remained in iḥrām …”
If both versions are judged authentic, they point to qirān. Should one suspend judgment about either of them, the proof is inconclusive. But if preference is given to the report that Muslim includes in his Ṣaḥīḥ which speaks of ʿUmrah, then it has already been mentioned that Ibn ʿAbbās also narrated ifrād—entering iḥrām for Hajj alone. That would amount to an additional act alongside the Hajj, and thus leads once again to the conclusion of qirān, all the more so because further evidence from Ibn ʿAbbās supporting this will follow.
Muslim (3) further transmits—through Ghundar and Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh, from Shuʿbah, from al-Ḥakam, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This is an ʿUmrah from which we have derived benefit; whoever does not have a sacrificial animal should come completely out of iḥrām, for ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Bukhārī (4)—from Ādam ibn Abī Iyās—and Muslim (5)—through Ghundar—both report from Shuʿbah on the authority of Abū Jamrah, who said: “I performed tamattuʿ, but some people forbade me. I asked Ibn ʿAbbās and he told me to go ahead with it. Later I saw in a dream as though a man were saying, ‘An accepted Hajj and an accepted tamattuʿ.’ I informed Ibn ʿAbbās, and he said, ‘Allāhu Akbar! That is the Sunnah of Abū’l-Qāsim, peace and blessings be upon him.’ Here, tamattuʿ means qirān.”
Al-Qaʿnabī (6) and others relate—from Mālik ibn Anas (7), from Ibn Shihāb, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith (8) ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib—that he said: “I heard Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ and al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays, in the year Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān performed Hajj, discussing the tamattuʿ of ʿUmrah to Hajj. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk said, ‘No one does that except someone ignorant of Allah’s command.’ Saʿd replied, ‘What an evil thing you have said, nephew!’ Al-Ḍaḥḥāk retorted, ‘ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb used to forbid it.’ Saʿd responded, ‘Nonetheless, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it, and we did it with him.’”
This report is also transmitted by al-Tirmidhī (9) and al-Nasāʾī (10) through Qutaybah, from Mālik, and al-Tirmidhī declared it sound.
