“…one. I call you all to witness that I have now bound the Hajj to my ʿUmrah.” He then went on until he reached the Sacred House, circumambulated it, and ran between Ṣafā and Marwah seven times, adding nothing beyond that. He deemed this sufficient and offered a sacrificial animal.
This report is recorded by the two compilers of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections through the chain of Mālik, and they both also transmit it through the chain of ʿUbayd Allāh from Nāfiʿ. ʿAbd al-Razzāq likewise narrated it through ʿUbayd Allāh and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Dāwūd, from Nāfiʿ with similar wording, concluding: “That is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.”
Al-Bukhārī also relates—saying: “Qutaybah narrated to us; Layth narrated to us; from Nāfiʿ—that Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj the year al-Ḥajjāj laid siege to Ibn al-Zubayr. People said to him, ‘There will be fighting, and we fear they will bar you.’ He replied, ‘Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example’ (al-Aḥzāb 21). ‘So I shall do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you to witness that I have obligated an ʿUmrah.’ He then set out; and when he reached the outskirts of al-Bayḍāʾ he said, ‘I regard the matter of Hajj and ʿUmrah as one and the same. I call you to witness that I have now obligated a Hajj together with my ʿUmrah.’ He then offered a sacrificial animal he had purchased at Qudayd, adding nothing beyond that; he neither slaughtered it at that point, nor came out of any of the prohibitions, nor shaved or trimmed his hair until the Day of Sacrifice, when he slaughtered and shaved. He considered his first circumambulation to have satisfied both rites, and Ibn ʿUmar said, ‘That is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.’
Al-Bukhārī further reports: “Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us; from Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ: that Ibn ʿUmar came in to his son ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who was in the courtyard, and said, ‘I fear there may be fighting this year and they will bar you from the House; why not stay?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and the idolaters of Quraysh placed themselves between him and the House. If they do the same to me, I shall act as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example” (al-Aḥzāb 21). Therefore I call you to witness that I have bound a Hajj to my ʿUmrah.’ He then arrived and performed a single circumambulation for both rites.
Al-Bukhārī also transmits it through Abū al-Nuʿmān, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Ayyūb ibn Abī Tamīm
