Al-Dāraquṭnī related:
(1) Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Ismāʿīl and Muḥammad ibn Makhlad narrated to us, saying: ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Razzāz narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar:
The Prophet ﷺ appointed ʿAttāb ibn Asīd to oversee the Hajj, and he performed it as ifrād (a single, uncombined pilgrimage). He then appointed Abū Bakr in the ninth year, and Abū Bakr likewise performed the Hajj singly. In the tenth year the Prophet ﷺ himself performed Hajj and did so singly. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away and Abū Bakr became Caliph, he dispatched ʿUmar, who performed the Hajj singly; thereafter Abū Bakr performed Hajj and performed it singly. When Abū Bakr died and ʿUmar succeeded him, ʿUmar sent ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, and he performed the Hajj singly; then ʿUmar performed Hajj and did so singly. (When ʿUmar died and ʿUthmān became Caliph, he too performed the Hajj singly.) When ʿUthmān was besieged, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās led the people and performed the Hajj singly.
In this chain appears ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿUmari, who is weak; however, al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: “It has a corroborating report with a sound chain.”
Those who maintained that the Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj as a mutamattiʿ

(8) Ḥajjāj narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us; ʿUqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihāb, from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, combined ʿUmrah with Hajj (tamattuʿ). He offered a sacrificial animal and drove it from Dhū al-Ḥulayfah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began by entering into ihrām for ʿUmrah, then he entered into ihrām for Hajj. Among the people were those who had also brought sacrificial animals, driving them from Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, and others who had not.
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca, he said to the people:
‘Whoever among you has brought a sacrificial animal must not release himself from anything that became unlawful for him until he has completed his Hajj. Whoever among you has not brought a sacrificial animal should circumambulate the House, go between Ṣafā and Marwah, trim his hair, and exit the state of consecration; then he should enter into ihrām for Hajj and offer a sacrifice. Whoever cannot find a sacrifice should fast three days during Hajj and seven when he returns to his family.’
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Mecca, he circumambulated the House, beginning by touching the Black Stone corner first …”
