The narration of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh on ifrād
Imām Aḥmad (1) reports: “Abū Muʿāwiyah related to us; al-Aʿmash related to us, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: ‘During his pilgrimage the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared the talbiyah for Hajj (2).’ Its chain is sound by Muslim’s standards.
Al-Bayhaqī (3) transmits it through al-Ḥākim and others, from al-Aṣamm, from Aḥmad ibn al-Jabbār, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, who said: “The Messenger of Allah declared the talbiyah in his pilgrimage for Hajj with no ʿUmrah attached.” This additional wording is exceedingly rare, and the version preserved by Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal is more reliable. Allah knows best.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (4), through the chain of Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad from his father, from Jābir, it is related that he said: “We entered into Hajj and did not know ʿUmrah.”
Ibn Mājah (5) narrates, through Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, from al-Darāwardī and Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl—both from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir—that “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj alone (ifrād).” This isnād is sound.
Imām Aḥmad (6) also says: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī related to us; Ḥabīb—meaning the Teacher—related to us, from ʿAṭāʾ. Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, together with his Companions, declared the talbiyah for Hajj; none of them had a sacrificial animal except the Prophet ﷺ and Ṭalḥah …,” and he mentioned the remainder of the ḥadīth. The full text appears in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (7) through Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb.
The narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar on ifrād
Imām Aḥmad (8) relates: “Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad told us; ʿAbbād—meaning Ibn ʿAbbād—told us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated to me, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: ‘We declared the talbiyah with the Prophet ﷺ for Hajj alone (mufradan).’”
