When Ibn ʿUmar wished to travel to Mecca, he would anoint himself with an oil that had no pleasant fragrance, then proceed to the mosque of Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah and perform prayer. After that he would mount his animal, and once it had risen and was standing upright with him, he would enter the state of iḥrām, saying, “This is exactly how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it.”
Al-Bukhārī alone transmitted this wording through this route.
Muslim likewise related—from Qutaybah, from Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Sālim, from his father—who said: “This plain of yours, where you allege that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began the talbiyah, is where you are lying about him. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pronounce the talbiyah except beside the tree, when his camel had risen with him.”
This ḥadīth reconciles Ibn ʿUmar’s first report with his other narrations: the iḥrām was initiated at the mosque, but only after he had mounted and his beast had risen with him upon the open ground—that is, the level earth—before he reached the spot specifically called al-Bayḍāʾ.
Al-Bukhārī also said elsewhere: “Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddamī narrated to us; Fuḍayl ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah narrated to us; he said: Kuraib related to me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘The Prophet ﷺ set out from Madinah after he had combed his hair, applied oil, and donned his waist-wrapper and mantle, he and his Companions. He did not forbid the wearing of any cloaks or waist-wrappers except those dyed with safflower whose color stains the skin. He reached Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah in the morning, mounted his camel, and when it stood upright with him on the open ground he and his Companions entered iḥrām and he garlanded
(his sacrificial camel. This occurred five days before the end of Dhū’l-Qaʿdah. He arrived in Mecca four nights into Dhū’l-Ḥijjah, circumambulated the House, performed saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwah, and did not release himself from iḥrām because of the sacrificial animal he had garlanded. He then encamped at the upper part of Mecca)
at al-Ḥajūn while remaining in iḥrām for ḥajj. He never approached the Kaʿbah again after that initial circumambulation until he returned from ʿArafah. He instructed his Companions to circle the House and go between Ṣafā and Marwah, then to shorten their hair and exit iḥrām; this applied to anyone who did not have a garlanded sacrificial animal. Whoever was accompanied by his wife was permitted intimacy, perfume, and ordinary clothing.’”
Al-Bukhārī alone related this narration.
Imām Aḥmad likewise transmitted—from Bahz ibn Asad, Ḥajjāj, Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah, and ʿAffān ibn Muslim, all from Shuʿbah—who said: “Qatādah informed me; he said: I heard Abū Ḥassān al-Aʿraj al-Ajrad—who is Muslim ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Baṣrī—narrate from Ibn ʿAbbās:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the ẓuhr prayer at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah, then called for his sacrificial camel and split the skin on the right side of its hump…’”
