Muslim also said (1): “Abu Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Mushir narrated to us; from ʿUbayd Allāh; from Nāfiʿ; from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: ‘Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his foot in the stirrup and his mount rose and stood upright with him, he would enter the state of iḥrām at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah.’”
Muslim alone transmitted the report through this chain, whereas the two Shaykhs related it through another route (4) from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from him.
Bukhārī then said (5): “Chapter: Pronouncing the talbiyah while facing the qiblah.”
Abū Maʿmar said: ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us; Ayyūb narrated to us; from Nāfiʿ, who said: “When Ibn ʿUmar had performed the dawn prayer (6) at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah, he would have his camel prepared. He would then mount; and once it had stood upright with him, he would face the qiblah standing and recite the talbiyah until he entered the Sacred Precinct (7). He would then desist until, on reaching Dhū Tuwa (8), he spent the night there until morning. After praying the dawn prayer he would bathe, claiming that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done so.” He added: “Ismāʿīl corroborated Ayyūb regarding the bath.”
Bukhārī (9) also cited this ḥadīth in suspended form in the Book of Ḥajj, from Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd; and he supplied its full chain there (10) from Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dawraqī, from Ismāʿīl—that is, Ibn ʿUlayyah.
Muslim likewise recorded it from Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb, from Ismāʿīl; and from Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī and others, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd—each of them from Ayyūb ibn Abī Tamīmah al-Sakhtiyānī with this chain (12). Abū Dāwūd also transmitted it from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah.
Bukhārī then said (13): “Sulaymān Abū al-Rabīʿ narrated to us; Fulayḥ narrated to us; from Nāfiʿ, who said: ‘Whenever Ibn ʿUmar intended…’”
