with his own chain of transmission from Ibn ʿAbbās.
Al-Bayhaqī said: “However, al-Wāqidī’s corroboration (1) is of no benefit, for the reports that have come on this matter from Ibn ʿUmar (2) and others possess sound, well-established chains. Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
I say: Had this ḥadīth been authentic, it would have reconciled the apparent discrepancies among the various narrations and afforded an excuse for those who reported something at variance with the actual facts. Yet its isnād is weak, and, moreover, accounts contrary to what has been cited above are related from both Ibn ʿAbbās and Ibn ʿUmar, as we shall soon indicate and clarify. The same holds for those who state that he ﷺ pronounced the talbiyah only after his mount had risen and stood upright.
Al-Bukhārī (3) said: ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to me, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ prayed four rakʿahs in Madinah and two rakʿahs at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah. He then spent the night there until morning; when he mounted his camel and it stood up with him, he entered the state of iḥrām.” ’
This narration was reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and also by the compilers of the Sunan (4) through various chains from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir and Ibrāhīm ibn Maysarah, from Anas.
It is likewise firmly established in the Two Ṣaḥīḥs (5)—in the ḥadīth of Mālik, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from ʿUbayd ibn Jurayj, from Ibn ʿUmar—that he said: ‘As for the talbiyah, I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounce it until his camel began to move with him.’
The two Shaykhs also recorded it in their Ṣaḥīḥs (6) through the transmission of Ibn Wahb, from Yūnus, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, stating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would mount his camel at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfah and then pronounce the talbiyah when it had risen standing with him.
Al-Bukhārī (7) said—under the heading “One who pronounced the talbiyah when his mount stood upright with him”: ‘Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us; Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān informed me, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ pronounced the talbiyah when his mount had stood upright with him.” ’
This report was also transmitted by Muslim and al-Nasāʾī (8) through Ibn Jurayj by this same chain.
