He then added, saying: “At Your service, O Allah, at Your service.” (1)
In another wording reported by both of them (2), through Mālik, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Sālim, it is related that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said, “This stretch of al-Bayḍāʾ about which you people fabricate against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—by Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not enter iḥrām except right beside the mosque.” (3)
A report to the contrary from Ibn ʿUmar has also been transmitted, as will be mentioned in the next section. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both included it in their Ṣaḥīḥs (4) through Mālik, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from ʿUbayd ibn Jurayj, from Ibn ʿUmar, in which ʿAbd Allāh says, “As for the talbiyah, I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ utter it until his mount began to move.”
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: “Yaʿqūb narrated to us; my father narrated to us; from Ibn Isḥāq; he said that Ḥuṣayf ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jazarī related to me, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said:
‘I said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, ‘O Abū al-ʿAbbās, how astonishing is the divergence among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding the moment when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered iḥrām!’ He replied, ‘I know more about that than anyone else. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed only one ḥajj, and that is where their accounts differ.
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for ḥajj. After praying his two rakʿahs in his mosque at Dhūl-Ḥulayfah, he bound himself to the rites while still seated, and he pronounced the talbiyah for ḥajj as soon as he had finished the two rakʿahs. Some people heard him and preserved that report.
‘Then he mounted, and when his she-camel rose with him he pronounced the talbiyah again, and others caught that from him, for the people were arriving in successive groups. They heard him pronouncing the talbiyah when his camel stood up and concluded that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not enter iḥrām until his camel had risen.
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then continued on; when he reached the rise of al-Bayḍāʾ he pronounced the talbiyah once more, and yet another group witnessed that, saying, “He only entered iḥrām when he reached the crest of al-Bayḍāʾ.”
‘By Allah, he entered the rites in his place of prayer, he pronounced the talbiyah when his camel rose, and he pronounced it again when he reached the crest of al-Bayḍāʾ. Whoever follows the statement of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās will pronounce the talbiyah in his place of prayer as soon as he finishes the two rakʿahs.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī (7) both transmitted the same report through Qutaybah, from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb, from Ḥuṣayf. Al-Tirmidhī commented, “It is ḥasan gharīb; we do not know anyone who related it except ʿAbd al-Salām.” The version from Imām Aḥmad through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq has already been cited above, and al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (8) also narrated it—from al-Ḥākim, from al-Qaṭīʿī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, from his father—then remarked, “Ḥuṣayf al-Jazarī is not strong.” It was likewise reported by al-Wāqidī
