Mālik (1) related—through Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar—that Ḥafṣah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: “Messenger of Allah, why have the people come out of their ʿumrah while you have not come out of yours?” He replied, “I have matted my hair and garlanded my sacrificial animals, so I will not leave the state of consecration until I have slaughtered.”
Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim recorded the report in their two Ṣaḥīḥs (2) on Mālik’s authority, and it has many additional chains from Nāfiʿ.
Al-Bayhaqī (3) said: al-Ḥākim narrated to us; (al-Aṣamm, Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn) Yaḥyā narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ matted his hair after bathing. This chain is sound.
He ﷺ then marked and garlanded the sacrificial animals that were with him at Dhūl-Ḥulayfah (5).
Al-Layth narrated—through ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father—that during the Farewell Pilgrimage the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed tamattuʿ, combining ʿumrah with ḥajj, and brought along the sacrificial animals from Dhūl-Ḥulayfah. The full report will appear later; it is found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (6), and we shall discuss it, God willing.
Muslim (7) also recorded: Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; Muʿādh ibn Hishām—al-Dastuwāʾī—narrated to us; my father narrated to me, from Qatādah, from Abū Ḥassān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Dhūl-Ḥulayfah he called for his she-camel, marked it on the right side of its hump so that the blood flowed, garlanded it with two sandals, and then mounted his riding-beast.
The four compilers of Sunan (9) have likewise transmitted this ḥadīth through several chains from Qatādah.
