Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded the report in the “Book of Seeking Permission” (1) through the isnād of Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿfar, and Muslim transmitted it through Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ—both of them narrating from ʿAbd al-Razzāq with the same wording.
Imām Aḥmad also said (2): “Rawḥ related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah related to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Adam’s height was sixty cubits, and his breadth was seven cubits.’”
This wording is unique to Aḥmad.
Imām Aḥmad further said (4): “ʿAffān related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah related to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
When the verse on recording debts was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘The first to renege was Adam—yes, the first to renege was Adam; the first to renege was Adam. When Allah created Adam, He passed His hand over his back and brought forth from him all those whom He would create until the Day of Resurrection. He then began presenting Adam’s offspring to him. Adam saw among them a man whose face was shining.
He asked, “My Lord, who is this?”
Allah said, “This is your son David.”
He said, “My Lord, how long is his lifespan?”
Allah replied, “Sixty years.”
He said, “My Lord, increase his lifespan.”
Allah said, “Not unless I add it from your own lifespan.” Adam’s appointed term was a thousand years, so he granted David forty of them. Allah recorded this in a document and made the angels bear witness to it. When Adam’s death approached and the angels came to take his soul, he said, “Forty years of my lifespan still remain.”
They replied, “You donated those forty years to your son David.”
He said, “I did no such thing.” Then Allah produced the document against him, and the angels testified.’ (8)
Aḥmad also said (9): “Aswad ibn ʿĀmir related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah related to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
‘The first to renege was Adam’—he repeated this three times—‘When Allah created him He passed His hand over his back, brought forth his progeny and presented them to him. He saw among them a man whose face was shining. He said, “My Lord, grant him a longer life.” [Allah replied,] “Only if you allot it to him from your own life.” So Adam added forty years of his own lifespan to him, and Allah wrote…’
