Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī also relates this ḥadith in his Musnad through a different line of transmission from Anas ibn Mālik. He says: “ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṣabīḥ narrated to us; from Yazīd al-Raqāshī; from Anas, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Ḥajj on a shabby saddle with a coarse blanket beneath him that was worth—indeed, perhaps not even worth—four dirhams. Then he supplicated: “O Allah, let it be a Pilgrimage free of ostentation.”’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī records the same report in al-Shamāʾil, as do Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī and Sufyān al-Thawrī, while Ibn Mājah transmits it through Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ; all three chains go back to al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṣabīḥ. The isnād, however, is weak because of Yazīd ibn Abān al-Raqāshī, whose narrations are not accepted by the hadith masters.
Imām Aḥmad said: “Hāshim narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; from his father, who said: I departed with Ibn ʿUmar on the Day of Departure, and a Yemeni caravan passed by us. Their pack-saddles were of tanned leather and the nose-ropes of their camels were made of fiber. ʿAbd Allāh said, ‘Anyone who wishes to see the caravan that most resembles the way the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions arrived for the Farewell Pilgrimage this year should look at this caravan.’ ”
Abū Dāwūd likewise transmits it through Hannād, from Wakīʿ, from Isḥāq ibn Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, giving the same account.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ, Abū Ṭāhir al-Faqīh, Abū Zakariyyā ibn Abī Isḥāq, Abū Bakr ibn al-Ḥasan, and Abū Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿAmr informed us, saying: Abū al-ʿAbbās—meaning al-Aṣamm—narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Bashīr al-Qurashī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥakīm al-Kinanī—a man from Yemen and one of their freedmen—narrated to us; from Bishr ibn Qudāmah al-Ḍabbābī, who said: ‘My own two eyes beheld the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ…’”
