Then al-Bukhārī said (1):
Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to us; Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah related to us; ʿAlī ibn Suwayd ibn Manjūf related to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ sent ʿAlī to Khālid ibn al-Walīd to receive the khums-tax on the spoils. I harbored dislike for ʿAlī, and the next morning he had bathed. I said to Khālid, ‘Do you not see what this fellow has done!’ When we reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I informed him of the matter. He said, ‘O Buraydah, do you detest ʿAlī?’ I answered, ‘Yes.’ He replied, ‘Do not hate him, for he is entitled to a share of the khums greater than that.’”
Al-Bukhārī alone records this report; Muslim does not transmit it through this chain.
Imām Aḥmad said (2):
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Jalīl narrated to us, saying:
“I came upon a study-circle in which sat Abū Mijlaz and Ibn (3) Buraydah. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah said: My father (4) Buraydah told me:
‘I detested ʿAlī with a hatred I had never felt toward anyone. I even befriended a man of Quraysh solely because he despised ʿAlī. That man was later placed in command of a cavalry detachment, and I joined him for no reason other than our shared animosity toward ʿAlī. We captured some prisoners and he wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Send someone to assess the khums.” The Prophet ﷺ sent ʿAlī to us. Among the captives was a maidservant—clearly the finest of them.
ʿAlī made the assessment, set aside the khums, and distributed the remainder; then he left with water dripping from his head. We asked, “Abū al-Ḥasan, what is this?” He replied, “Have you not seen that maidservant among the captives? When I divided the spoils and set aside the khums, she entered the fifth, then passed to the Prophet’s household, then to the family of ʿAlī, and I have taken her to myself.”
The commander wrote to the Prophet ﷺ about the incident, and I said, “Send me with the letter.” He appointed me as the revenue-collector. I kept reading the letter aloud, adding, “He speaks the truth.”
The Prophet ﷺ seized my hand and the letter and asked, “Do you hate ʿAlī?” I replied, “Yes.” He said, “Do not hate him; and if you love him, then increase your love for him. By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, the share allotted to ʿAlī’s household in the khums is better than any maidservant.”
After the Prophet ﷺ said this, no one on earth became dearer to me than ʿAlī.’”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah added, “By Him besides Whom there is no deity, there is nothing between me and the Prophet ﷺ in this report except my father, Buraydah.”
This wording is unique to ʿAbd al-Jalīl ibn ʿAṭiyyah al-Qaysī, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Baṣrī. Ibn Maʿīn and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him reliable, though al-Bukhārī (5) said he is prone to occasional error.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (6) said: Abān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Niyār al-Aslamī, from his maternal uncle ʿAmr ibn Shās al-Aslamī—who was present at al-Ḥudaybiyyah—who said:
