Aḥmad also said: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr al-Ḥaḍramī, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised me with ten words:
- Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are killed or burned alive.
- Do not disobey your parents, even if they order you to leave your family and wealth.
- Never deliberately abandon an obligatory prayer, for whoever deliberately abandons an obligatory prayer is no longer under Allah’s protection.
- Do not drink wine, for it is the source of every obscenity.
- Beware of sin, for through sin the wrath of Allah is unleashed.
- Beware of fleeing the battlefield, even if the people around you perish.
- If death (plague) strikes the people while you are among them, remain steadfast.
- Spend on your dependents according to your means.
- Do not withhold the rod of discipline from them.
- Instill in them fear of Allah, Exalted is He.
Aḥmad also said: Yūnus narrated to us; Baqiyyah, from al-Sarī ibn Yanʿum, from Murayḥ ibn Masrūq, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Yemen, he said:
“Beware of luxury, for the servants of Allah are not given to self-indulgence.”
Aḥmad further said: Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-Hāshimī narrated to us; Abū Bakr—meaning Ibn ʿAyyāsh—reported to us; ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from Muʿādh, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched me to Yemen and instructed me to collect from every pubescent male one dinar—or its equivalent in Maʿāfir cloth—to take from every forty cattle a mature cow, from every thirty cattle a year-old calf, to levy a tenth on crops watered by rainfall, and half a tenth on those irrigated artificially.
Abū Dāwūd transmitted it with the isnād of Abū Muʿāwiyah, and al-Nasāʾī with that of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Aʿmash as well.
